Navigating PCOS and IBS with BioKinesiology Support

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It is characterised by irregular periods, high levels of male hormones (androgens), and small cysts on the ovaries. While PCOS is primarily known for its impact on the reproductive system, many women with PCOS also experience digestive issues.

One of the most common digestive issues associated with PCOS is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Research has shown that women with PCOS are more likely to have IBS compared to women without PCOS. IBS is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder that causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea. The exact link between PCOS and IBS is not fully understood, but it is believed that hormonal imbalances and inflammation play a role.

Insulin resistance is another hallmark of PCOS, which can also contribute to digestive issues. Insulin resistance occurs when the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. This can result in symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhoea. Furthermore, insulin resistance can also disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, known as the microbiome, which can further exacerbate digestive issues.

In addition, women with PCOS are more likely to have a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can also lead to digestive problems. NAFLD is a buildup of fat in the liver that is not caused by alcohol consumption. It can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and indigestion.

Managing digestive issues in women with PCOS involves a multi-faceted approach. This may include adopting a healthy diet high in fiber, high protein breakfast and low in processed foods, exercising regularly, managing stress, and possibly taking medications or supplements to help regulate hormones and improve insulin sensitivity. Working with a healthcare provider who is knowledgeable about both PCOS and digestive health is crucial in developing an individualised treatment plan. This is what we strive to do in a BioKinesiology treatment, whereby, the following biochemistry pathways are assessed:

  • Digestive enzymes

  • Hormones

  • Liver phases

  • Energy production

  • Adrenal Pathway

  • Methylation Pathway

Following this assessment we determine what nutrients & supplements the body needs to support and address its imbalances. By addressing hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and insulin resistance, women with PCOS can help manage their digestive issues and improve their overall health and wellbeing.
