Your first Reflexology treatment

Reflexology is a gentle and safe therapy that aims to relax and rebalance your body. I treat each person individually and I aim to improve your overall wellbeing. You will receive a full system reflexology treatment meaning all your systems will receive stimulation promoting the body to rebalance and heal itself.

Things to know before your treatment

You will remain fully clothed during your treatment. You will only need to remove your shoes and socks so that I can work on the soles of your feet.

It’s best not to eat a heavy meal before a treatment. Other than that, just turn up as you are, in loose, comfortable clothes, and get ready to relax.

Getting to know you

Prior to your treatment I will ask you to complete a New Client Consultation Form. This helps me understand your overall health and lets me know of any concerns and health conditions (past & present) you may have before your treatment. Reflexology works on all parts of the body and not just one specific area therefore it is very important you let me know as much as you can. Doing this before your treatment day allows for a full hour for treatment and no disappointment if there are contra-indications that wouldn’t allow treatment to proceed.

On treatment day we will begin the treatment by having a chat about your consultation form and we’ll discuss what you would like to get from the treatment i.e. Relaxation, Improve overall health or Specific areas of concern. Next, I will briefly explain What Reflexology is and how it works.

Your reflexology treatment

After talking through your consultation form you will remove your shoes and socks and lay on the massage table where I will begin by looking at your feet to see if there are any obvious imbalances in the body.  I will introduce my hands to your feet and ask you to take 3 deep breaths. I will carry out relaxation exercises on your feet to begin the treatment. I also like to play relaxing music to make you feel comfortable. I will then start to gently press around different areas on the soles of your feet, on the front of your feet and ankle area. This is activating the reflex points on the feet that correspond to the organs, muscles, bones, nerves, lymph nodes and glands of the body. I usually start with the left foot and I will cover the right foot to keep it warm while the left is being treated.

If I find textures such as crystals, grit, or puffiness this indicates congestion or an energy blockage in the corresponding body part. To promote healing in this area I will apply pressure or yielding pressure. Sometimes, I may go back to an area more than once if I feel more work is needed there. Sometimes you may feel some points are tender, this is normal and can indicate sensitivities around the area of the body the point represents.  If you feel any discomfort from the pressure, you should let me know. The sensation should be reasonably firm, but it should never feel painful.

What will you feel during your treatment?

Reflexology feels different for each person. Normally, clients feel relaxed and sometimes even fall asleep during a treatment. Other normal reactions to reflexology may include feeling warm, sweating in the hands or feet, increased emotions, tingling and sharp sensation.

Clients may feel slight discomfort when muscle groups that are being stimulated contract. When sensitive reflex points are activated, it may feel like a bruise, comforting pressure, and warmth in the corresponding area of the body.

End of treatment and aftercare guidance

I will end the treatment with some relaxation exercises. Don’t feel rushed to bring yourself back to the present moment too quickly. Take a moment to enjoy your relaxed state.

My reflexology treatments usually last about 60 minutes and should leave you feeling relaxed and with a renewed feeling of energy. Afterwards, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and stick to light meals for 24 hours if you can and rest as necessary.

After your appointment, I fill out a foot chart of my observations and update your consultation record.

Future Treatments

When you return for your next appointment, we will discuss how you have felt since the last treatment, any changes to present condition and any lifestyle changes prior to beginning your treatment.  The information you share with me will be built into your treatment plan and future treatments.

How often should I have a reflexology treatment?

Ask yourself these questions-

  • How often would you like to feel the benefits of reflexology?

  • How often do you need to destress or rejuvenate?

  • How often do you need to boost your immune system?

  • How often would you like to enjoy an hour of relaxation?

It is recommended to have a Reflexology treatment once per week for 6 weeks and monthly maintenance thereafter. The number of treatments depends on the person and how they are feeling.

The benefits of reflexology build over time, having frequent sessions is advised, especially if you are new to the practice.
